The story behind the Gravatar

I’ve been asked about my Gravatar photo and thought I’d share where I got it. To those who don’t know what Gravatar is, this is from their site: “Your Gravatar is an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums…”

In other words, when I comment in my own comments on here, the same image always shows up to represent that it’s me. Some people choose graphics, some people choose their picture. I wanted some small level of anonymity so I used the photo of a beautiful sunflower with a giant bumblebee.

Now to the original question: there is no mystery or story there. My gravatar is from a photo I took in our garden the first year we were married. My mother-in-law knew I love sunflowers so she sent us a seed packet for them. These were some of the prettiest flowers I’ve seen in that they weren’t simple yellow and black. Instead, they were beautiful red sun bursts! One day I was taking a picture of our garden and one of the biggest, furriest bumblebees I’ve ever seen landed right on it so I snapped a picture.

Here is the original:
