How to: Make a gum card (vlog with added written commentary)

IMG_4758When I was a kid, we made people gum cards. Especially little kids who were in and out of the hospital, if I remember correctly. What is a gum card? It’s literally a greeting card made out of gum. Well, decorated with gum.

Gum cards may not be fancy or very professional, but they sure are inexpensive, creative and fun. Besides, who doesn’t want to get a card filled with gum?

Don’t have time to watch the video or just not a visual learner? Here’s the steps to making a gum card all written out.

1.

Start with basic construction paper of just about any color. The lighter, the better, though. This will make it easier for your drawing and words to show up.

Draw a stick figure and give it clothes (so that it's not nekkid when the gum gets taken off!). Don't bother to draw a detailed person. Seriously, use a stick figure.

Glue pieces of stick gum to the stick figure, making almost like a "tin man." Small tip: put the adhesive on the folded side of the gum paper so that gum doesn't fall out of the wrapper. You can use any kind of adhesive but I like a simple glue stick. Super glue will ruin the card.

5. Decorate the card and write the message on the inside. If you have gum left over, you can write the child’s first initial on the inside cover and cover that with gum as well.
